Inner Trailheads

How does therapy help?

At Inner Trailheads, we provide a nonjudgemental space where you can slow down, explore your experiences, and work through the barriers that are keeping you from creating meaningful connections and living life with purpose.

By working to get to the root of the issues you are facing, therapy helps break the cycle of thoughts and patterns that no longer serve you, allowing you to initiate effective solutions and create a life where your happiness is once again in your control.

If you are struggling with:

Therapy can help you:

Therapy can help you face future challenges with confidence. Throughout our sessions we work to gain a deeper understanding of your challenges and triggers, helping you build the skills, and resilience to manage stress, anxiety, and unexpected events.

In therapy, you’ll learn how to define your limits healthily. This means saying “yes” when it feels right and learning to say “no” without feeling guilty, leading to a greater sense of freedom, and more balanced relationships.

Therapy can help you develop a deeper understanding of your thoughts, emotions, and experiences, and how they shape your reality. When you are more aware of how you feel and why you feel that way, you can set boundaries and make decisions that better align with your needs and values.

Life transitions, such as a career shift, a change in family dynamics, or a significant loss can be overwhelming and confusing. In therapy, we can help guide you through the decisions, emotions, and new realities that come with the change.

The stress of dealing with significant issues in life can make it hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, or how to even move forward. In therapy, we can help explore each challenge, allowing you to find the clarity you need to move forward with confidence

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health issues affecting people today. In therapy, we work together to identify the root causes of your anxiety and develop practical strategies to ease your anxious thoughts, so you can regain a sense of calm and control in your life.

Often, just knowing that you have someone in your corner can make a big difference in how you face challenges. The support can be profoundly reassuring, especially during times when you may feel isolated or overwhelmed by life’s challenges. We aim to create a safe, comfortable space where you can openly express your emotions and experience the support you need. Here, you can laugh, cry, and sit in silence–we will stand as your advocate and guide you through it all.

You have what you need to heal – we help you access it.

People come to therapy for a lot of reasons. And most of us are hoping for a quick fix. But real change requires us to dig a little deeper.

Grounded in compassion, we help you shift the conversation from “what’s wrong with me?” to explore “what happened to me.” The experiences of our lives deeply shape our thoughts, feelings, and behavioural patterns. Some experiences may even lead us to take on beliefs that we are “not enough,” insignificant, or even unloveable. So of course we would find ways to armour up and protect ourselves against the pain of those beliefs. At Inner Trailheads, we deeply believe that everyone is coping and navigating this world in the best way they know how.

Our hope is that counselling provides you with a safe and non-judgemental space to get curious about yourself and the challenges you’ve faced. Our experienced team will help you get to the root of your pain. We work with you, at your pace, on your goals, to access your inherent capacity for growth and healing.

Our Approach

How Individual Therapy Works

No two individual’s paths are the same. When we meet, it’s our job to listen to the journey that brought you here. Together we will define and develop a personalized plan to determine the path you need to create lasting change. We will work with you to take the steps to feeling and living better.

Inner Trailheads

Frequently Asked Questions

The first session is an opportunity for your therapist to get to know you, but also for you to get to know your therapist. Typically, sessions start by going over paperwork and answering any questions you might have before the process begins. Next, your therapist will invite you to share what brought you to therapy at this time. They will listen deeply to you and ask some clarifying questions along the way. By the end of this conversation, they will better understand your goals and what you’d like to work on. They can recommend an approach that would best suit you and together you can come up with a plan for your work.

Choosing the right therapist for you is an important decision, which is why at Inner Trailheads we help match you with one of our highly skilled clinicians (and offer a free 20-minute consultation) to help you find the right fit.

With lots of options out there, there are three main criteria to keep in mind:

  • Do you feel comfortable with this person? Could you see yourself sharing personal information with them? Therapeutic modalities aside, the relationship you have with your therapist will serve as the foundation for healing. So you want to be able to see yourself having a good relationship with them. The things that make you feel comfortable are truly personal–maybe you like someone who can use humour to lighten things up at the end of a session, maybe dropping a few F-bombs reminds you it is ok to speak unfiltered, or maybe the way they listen makes you feel really seen. Pay attention to these things, because they matter.
  • Are they confident in what they are doing? A good therapist is more than a kind friend. They are highly trained and skilled in working with complex issues. You are welcome to ask them about their experience and training. A good therapist should be able to clearly communicate a plan for working together and collaborate with you to meet your goals.
  • Have they done their own inner work? You might feel weird asking your therapist if they’ve been to therapy, but don’t. You want to work with someone who knows what it feels like to be in your chair. A therapist who has experienced their own healing will be able to relate to you with deeper compassion and understanding and will be better able to guide you in finding your path forward.

Since there is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy, this is a tricky question to answer. Deciding how many sessions would be helpful depends on your goals, your personal history, and the other support systems in your life.

Some people may come for a couple of sessions to work through a specific issue that has come up in their lives. Therapy can be a helpful space to slow down and listen to your inner wisdom. Whereas other people will come to therapy with more complex issues and untangling those can take months or even years. The beauty of working with a therapist at Inner Trailheads is we will work with you for as long as you need, at a pace that best serves you.

Many people choose to start by meeting with their therapist every week. This can be helpful as you are building momentum and getting to know your inner world. Or some people opt for biweekly appointments if that’s helpful to offset the cost or balance a busy schedule. We work with whatever schedule suits you best.

The therapists at Inner Trailheads work with adults (18+). Kids are great! But working with them requires special training and a space set up just for kids.

Possible Outcomes

Therapy is a deeply individual journey, and because of that, we can’t gurarantee a certain time frame or outcome. One thing we can tell you is that progress takes time and consistency, and if you keep showing up, you are likely to see positive outcomes in your life, such as:

Live a fuller and more meaningful life that aligns with your values!
